The Fu Dog – or more formally the Imperial Guardian Lion – evokes protection according to the practice of feng shui. They serve as a symbol of family wealth and social status and are often placed in front of wealthy homes. They can also decorate Imperial palaces, temples, and government offices.
Traditionally they are deployed in pairs. A male Fu Dog faces left, which signifies control over his domain and protection of his home. A female Imperial Guardian Lion faces right to signify her strong maternal protective instincts.
These qing dynasty antique Fu Dogs were created using a repose technique (hand hammerer from the reverse side) in silver and offered in a variety of shapes and sizes. About 2.5″ wide.
